I carry a survival kit based on the one sold by Sporty's.  Only I went to 
Walmart instead.  It looks like a lot, but I only bring a little bit of 
everything.  For the pills, I carry just a few of the individual sealed 
pouches or blister packs, not bottles and I repackage everything in ziploc

backs to keep out moisture.  A friend of mine who spent 25 years doing
SERE 
(Survival, Evasion, Rescue, Escape) for the Airforce worked on it with me.

It weighs about ten pounds.

Leatherman tool
small roll duct tape
50 ft. nylon rope
needles & white thread (you want white in case you're sewing skin instead
of 
cloth)
5 ft. copper wire

liquid-filled compass
toilet tissue

SHELTER AND PROTECTION GROUP:
tarp & plastic stakes
two emergency space blankets
extra sunglasses
insect repellent
sunblock
