Lynn brings up some very good points:
Last summer when I flew to Barrow, AK, It was required to have enough
survival equipment in the plane to
keep the occupants alive for two weeks. I packaged up a Wal Mart survival
kit also and packed it into a
small tool bag that I got at Harbor Freight Aviation Supply? When I
finally got up above the Arctic
Circle I saw that everybody had a different idea about survival gear. I
will point out what I learned
that was different.
Pack most of your survival gear in and old fisherman's vest that you put
on under your topcoat. Because
what you end up with may be just what you have on!
Water is important to pack in the survival gear. You may be incapacitated
and die of thirst two feet
from some melting snow.
Stuff a couple of extra long shoestrings in some ziplock bags just to
carry in your pockets when flying.
Don't pile a bunch of stuff on top of the survival equipment, put it on
top.
An off highway/off airport landing in an Ercoupe/Aircoupe,{if experience
is any teacher} will more than
likely end up with the aircraft violently flipping on its back.
You cannot lift it off alone! You will be required to dig out {like I
did} or cut through the side
opposite from where you end up. It will take a hatchet., and a lot of
work, but believe me the
incentive is truly there.
This is serious business, but facing up to the challenge is part of
flying. Be a Scout.
"Be Prepared!"
