Doug,

I have a Garmin III (the non-av version, no aviation data base). It has
room
to store 500 waypoints. And is easy to use as far as the basics are
concerned. There are a bunch of extra features (that are, IMO, useless)
like
a "bread-crumb" trail that are more difficult to figure out. In fact I had
to get a Garmin rep to shut the crumb trail off when I was at Oshkosh a
couple years ago.

Entering waypoints is very easy. If you are at the location (like an
airport) you can hit a single button to enter it and then go to another
screen to edit the identifier. Takes only a few seconds. If you are not at
the location you can key in the coordinates, and then edit the identifier
as
before.

A simple "Go To" button is all you push to pick a waypoint to fly to.
You're
also supposed to be able to layout a course with multiple waypoints, but I
can't seem to figure out how. The manual is not very good, IMO.

I've also found that I never use the moving map feature. All you need is
the
compass page with a few of the user programmable readouts. Like heading,
Alt, groundspeed, etc.

If I had it to do over, I would not buy the Garmin. I spent about $350.00
4
years ago. You can get a Magellan 315 (non-av) for less than a $100, and
it
will do plenty. Again, you will not have an aviation data-base, but do you
really need the Lat/Long of airports on the west coast? Just key in the
airports/waypoints you need, as you need them. It doesn't take that long,
and once they're in, they're in.

And right now, Magellan has rebate coupons you can download off their web
site (http://www.magellangps.com/ Go to Handhelds/Outdoors). $20 off on
the
315.

I'm not familiar with the Lowrance.

Just my two-cents worth.

I am looking to invest in a handheld GPS and would appreciate any
suggestions.
I have downloaded and read the manuals for the Lowrance Airmap 100 and the
Garmin III Pilot.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these two models or
suggestions for another manufacturer?

Thanks for your help.
