My Alon is also a 1965 model with 9 gal wing tanks.  It came with unvented
wing caps.  That made me nervous so I started using vented caps.  Both the
vent and unvented caps will leak if the tanks are too full.  I try to keep
a
fill-up about an inch from the top (about a quart of fuel).  That helps on
slightly uneven ground or when climbing out.  I have had the vented caps
on
for about 3 years, and as far as I can tell they don't make the engine any
less prone to quitting when you least expect it.
