In recent months I have spent great deal of time and money chasing minor
engine leaks which now seem to be clearly related to the front seal which
has been replaced 3 times to no avail. So, weighing the options we removed
engine for overhaul. As this was happening a mechanic not working on the
aircraft noticed a raised edge along the top of the spar ... about a
pencil
width and minimal raise but still there on the edge through the right
walkbox.  Closer inspection of the spar shows no raising inside the cabin
or
on the left side - only this line on the right.
I had an Engineer familiar with Ercoupes come by to review , and  he
concurs
but notes that it is "minor" and oddly is not on the lower spar. We have
not
broken the surface as yet.
So, in one week went from serviceable and flying to perhaps terminal,
especially as the CDN $ makes anything too expensive. My question is - in
light of the coming focus on this area(proposed AD) and the age of these
planes , at what point do you start parting out?

I would never minimize the corrosion although it may be "repairable" , but
also don't want to be too quick in ascribing a 'coupe to history . I
clearly
recall many Piper owners dumping Cherokees and Comanches who later learned
the root cause was not as reported.

These aircraft were well constructed compared to many later designs , but
who knows what an aircraft "life" truly is. I'd appreciate any/all insight
on whether even considering repair makes any sense. I am prepared for the
engine work costs, but all is on hold as we assess the airframe. Is anyone
"expert" in exfoliation corrosion?
