I got this from a friend on the Aeronca list about the crashed airplane.

Bob Parker
Mena, AR.

Saturday, after flying back from Brown field with a friend, (We went down
to fly some Young Eagles), while we were turning toward base after doing
all the necessary radio work at Gillespie Field we heard a may-day call
requesting a straight in for runway 27R. The tower was a little confused
so we circled south of the pattern hoping the soul would glide to safety.
As we were cleared to land on the left I realized what had happened a few
moments earlier and who it was, as we flew over the fence at the road.

It turned out that is was my next door neighbor of 27 years. He did a
great job of flying the plane down. His com transmissions were calm.
However, he clipped the fence as he was dead-sticking in from a reported
8 miles out at about 3600 ft? (Last transmission we heard). The plane
and he landed on the North bound side of the freeway. After we landed, I
ran over to the site. The airplane was upside down. Damaged of course. No
fire, Thank G-d. He was talking (lucid) when Mercy Air got him onto the
strecher and off to the hospital. A short time later later, (according to
the EMT when the unit returned to base), he remained lucid upon arrival
at the hospital. We went to the hospital yesterday but did not get to see
him. He had undergone some surgury for internal bleeding. but remains
seriously injured. My wife talked with his wife today and I tonight. He
was still with us through the night. He remains with us now, though in
critical/serious condition, but stable. We believe in the power of
prayer and
G-d's mercy and healing. Please pray with us for his recovery and
continued strength for his wife.
