All. I am in the believe that when changing the nose gear to the double fork unit the taxi spring has to be changed also. (part 415-34041) I am in doubt tat this ever happened in most cases since Skyport does not lists the spring as an extra item. Here is why. Ercoupe service memorandum 51 recommends the installation of the 5.00 X 5 Nose wheel assembly to replace the 5.00 x 4 assembly. Both are the single fork units ! both are the same in dimensions, with the difference that the 5.00 x 5 one has two bearings , the 5.00 x 5 has only one. That's why they recommend the conversion. Later on the double fork got introduced. Here we have the same wheel with two bearings instead of one BUT the unit is approx. 1 inch longer than the single fork unit. For the ordinary mechanic and the FAA there is no difference between the units, so they did not demand the shorter taxi spring or anything different . Now almost all double fork installations I saw and measured are exactly 1 inch longer than the single fork ones, raising the front at 1 inch. This of course leads to all the known problems in a Coupe and the work around are the spacers in the MLG. How you approach the problem , the tail should be the 75 inches above the ground. You can install a shorter spring in the front or add the spacers in the mains. For someone with a single nose gear replacing the doughnuts should be sufficient, as it was in my case. I was surprised to find my old , sagged rubbers to look exactly like the new ones, the difference was that the new ones could hold the load , while the old ones did not. These rubbers get bad fast and if not replaced they make your Ercoupe appear like a taildragger . But to say it again, any single fork Ercoupe is well served with a rubber - doughnut replacement.
