James, Like you, last year I called every tire dealer listed in
Trade-a-Plane including Aircraft Spruce and Desser. Got the same answer,
sorry not in stock and we don't know when we will get more. That was for
a 5.00 x 4 tire and tube.
I decided to shift to the double fork and here is how I did it as cheap as
you can get I suppose with only one used part. Skyport sells the double
fork kit minus the tire, tube and wheel as kit number FMK-17H for the
steel gear at a cost of $625.50. I then bought a used Cleveland 5.00 x 5
wheel for $50.00. Bought a new 5.00 x 5 tire and tube for under $55.00
for both spending a total of $730.50. The same merchandise as kit FMK-17
is listed at $1,395.95 at Skyport for a savings of $665.45. A new
cleveland wheel from Univair is over$500.00. The one that I bought was
near new. My Logic is that the 5.00 x 4 tire and tube are going to get
more expensive and harder to get as time goes along. I sent two 5.00 x 4
tire carcasses to desser to see if they would recap them but they sent
them back as having side wall cracks and not suitable for recapping. And
yes, Goodyear is the ONLY maker of that size tire.
Maybe this will help.

Hello fellow coupers.

I had the good fortune of getting a flat nosewheel tire while still
parked on the ground, vice during landing or taking off. I have since
had the misfortune of finding a replacement tube. I have contacted
every tire and tube company that makes aviation tires and tubes that I
could find. It appears no one makes a tube that will fit into the
UNIVARI single fork rim. If this is true (and I hope SOMEONE out there
knows where to find such a tube) this may force people who have a
single fork to switch to a twin fork when their tube finally goes flat.
Does anyone have a possibly less expensive solution rather than paying
the $4600 for a new UNIVAIR twin fork system?

Thank you

Jim
