Hi John,

Now that it is time to get serious with the engine; you might want to
check
the exhaust system as this is one of the first steps in pulling the
cylinders in any case. If you have a partially blocked exhaust system it
can cause over heating. I have not studied the Ercoupe exhaust that
closely
but many small aircraft systems have baffles in them that can break lose
and make a partial stoppage of the hot gas flow, which can produce back
pressure in the cylinder and prevent the hot combustion gas from escaping
and this can cause overheating. It is worth looking at before you continue
to remove cylinders. Good luck.

If I were to have to overhaul a C-75 I would convert it to a C-85 and use
the 0-200 crank and rods as this will increase the HP to about 93 and it
will not cost much more to do. I would not purchase an engine unless I was
sure I had good reason to expect that it was done by an outstanding shop
or
person. There are people out there who sell what are represented as great
engines and they are not very well done and do not last.

Best regards,
Vern

Well Folks,

All the easy fixes have been tested/applied and the oil temp still goes
beyond redline in no time flat (20-25 minutes in flight). Haven't run in
on
the ground long enough yet to see how long that takes to redline, but I
don't think it really matters.

Anyway, the A&P says it is time to start tearing into the engine to locate
the problem. I have no idea as to what actions he should take first,
second, third... to look for the least expensive cost fix all the way to a
major overhaul. Any ideas would be apppreciated.

ALso, what is the conventional thinking on going with an engine
replacement
vs. teardown and overhaul of my engine. Folks have told me there are
refurbished C-75's around for $6,000 to $8,000 as to where a top will run
me at least $4,500 and a major at least $8,000 to $12,000. I am going to
make some phone calls starting tomorrow to verify the availability of
C-75's. Are these costs in the bounds of your own experiences?

Anyway, I know I have been asking alot lately, but would like to ask for
opinions, advice, and information from those who have been where I am now.
I am definitely going down a road that "I" have not been before.

Thanks,

John Adams
