  It's humble opinion that you've got a scuffed piston, causing things
to heat up very quickly.  Friction can cause extreme heat in a short
time.  I also find it unbelievable that it could cost $4500 for a top
overhaul unless you needed all new cylinders.  Any mechanic worth his
salt should have all the cylinders and other goodies off that plane in
less than eight hours.  It doesn't sound like your valves are leaking,
by what you said.  So with any luck, you may get away with a set of
rings and maybe a piston and a cylinder clean up.  If this is all you
need, don't be bullied into an overhaul.  If there is is nothing more
serious wrong, I don't see how you could spend $2000. Now, I could well
be wrong.  I was once before, if I can remember way back.  Basisally,
the only place that the engine generates serious heat, is in the
cylinder and piston area, so look there. A check of the spark plugs may
reveal one cylinder that is different from the others. If this is so,
remove just that one jug and have a look.  Hope this may be of some
help. Let us know what you find.
