I would let the annual expire, and see if you can get your mechanic to schedule starting it just before you get home :-) Yes, it can sit out of annual, so long as it isn't flying. I think half the airplanes in the USofA are probably in such a condition :-( If you aren't running it for 3 months, you really should follow the extended storage instructions in the engine manufacturers' service bulletin. That, essentially, amounts to getting it hot, dumping the oil, putting in an anti-corrosion oil (in this day and age, I'd probably use Exxon Elite), running the engine again to get the clean stuff distributed, and then replacing at least one spark plug in each cylinder with a dessicant plug to absorb moisture. 3 months not running won't help the engine at all, if there is moisture in there.
