Scott,

 

I'll be first, this time, to urge you to stay with fabric.

 

Reasons:

1.  Metalized wings weigh about 40 lb. more than fabric. (38+ by actual
measurement of a pair of wings on a previous time this subject came up.

Because of this, you have:

            a.  about 40 lb. lower useful load

            b.  a bit slower speed due to increased gross weight at the
same payload.

 

2.  A disproportionate amount of the corrosion found in Coupe wings has
been in metalized wings.  Consensus in previous discussions is that metal
does 

a. NOT protect the load-bearing structure better than fabric and that 

b. metal skinned wings don't get the complete inspection and repair fabric
covered wings get during recovering.  It's nice that fabric gets removed
every 20 years or so and EVERYTHING inside gets repaired before
recovering.

 

3.  Some metalizations are done incompetently.  Coupe wings have a slight
concavity on the bottom of the wing just behind the leading edge.  This
concavity is important to the good behavior of the Coupe in slow flight.
If you are looking at previously metalized wings, be SURE they have that
concavity.  If you contemplate metalizing your own wings, be sure the
concavity is maintained.

 

4.  A good fabric job gives a good smooth finish to the wing.  I was asked
20 or more times if my wings were metalized when they were fabric covered.

 

Summary:  fabric covered Coupe wings are superior to metal covered wings.

Does anyone know if there is an FAA approved procedure to change a fabric
wing on a 46' to metal?
