Steve.
Glad to hear you speak out on Owner Maintenance. As you my know, I'm
one of the three Canadian coupes on the program. I also feel that my
plane is in much better shape than most coupes that are maintained by
"Certified" mechanics and standards. It just bothers me that so many
people feel they have to walk such a tightrope with their planes for
fear of being punished like a bad child or of falling out of the sky.
As I've said before, take some responsibility for your own actions.
Maybe we should find self maintained coupe number three in Canada and
start our own dare devil airforce. "The dangerous trio". I'll soon
have a cylinder off my coupe{Low compression} and give it the once
over. I hear if you go to an auto wreckers, you can get some used
valves from a Pinto that come close enough to use in a Continental.
Just hacksaw half an inch or so off them and they should do. If they're
not too badly burned you don't even need to grind them in. Oh yes, and
if your rings are getting worn, just throw in a couple of cans of
S.T.P. It saves a bunch of money. And by the way, don't waste cash on
those fancy gasket sets. Save some of that stiff cardboard from Mc
Donalds. The grease on it makes it last forever!! Don't forget in
Canada we are only allowed to use certified metric cresent wrenches on
our rebuilds.
Good luck, you dare devil.
