FWIW

I just write down the tach hours when I fill the tanks and fill up no more
than 3 hours later. Since the tach hours slow down when the engine slows
down it works even if I loaf along or fly hard. I have a GPS in the
airplane with a "miles off centerline" feature. Since I do not need the
feature I set the mile off centerline (00.0 to 99.9) to the tach reading
at
each fill up.

My Coupe burns about 5.3 gal/hr at cruise and I fill the tanks about an
inch
down to avoid overflow so three tach hours works out to just about empty
wing tanks. I look at the wing gauge during the runup checklist but I
never
look at it in flight. I do keep an eye on the center tank float in case
the
fuel pump stops working (I got ice in the main line last winter and the
dropping wire with full mains got my attention) or there is leak in the
mains.

Greg, I have an electric clock in my plane that is wired to the master
switch. When I fill the tanks I set the clock for 12:00. The clock
only runs when the engine runs. I know I have enough fuel for about 4
1/2 hours of flying, so I refuel at between 2 1/2 and 3 hours burned. I
watch the clock more than the guages. The wire float guages are my
backup just in case I have a fuel line leak or some other problem.
