This is a great question. It took me about 20 minutes to figure out how to deal with this.
When you click "reply to a message," Gmail does automatically create a draft. If you then realize you don't want to send back the entire conversation - for example, if you're adding another recipient who doesn't need to know the prior conversation - the draft is automatically saved. It then shows up as a red "warning" because it's unfinished business, which is really, really annoying. The answer is to change your Gmail settings so each email is individual, not part of a conversation. First, be sure you are signed in to your Gmail account. Then, click on the black "settings" gear in the upper, right-hand corner of the page (usually under your profile icon). A menu will scroll down. Choose "settings" near the bottom of the menu. Gmail will take you to a long, long settings page. About halfway down is an option to turn off "view emails as a conversation." Click this option. Now each email you write will be an individual email, and the drafts will be separated from the other emails in the conversation. IMPORTANT - Scroll down to the bottom of the long "settings" page, and click "save changes." Unlike some other settings pages (Chrome, also built by Google), merely changing the settings and leaving the page will not save your settings. Now when you go to the "Drafts" folder in Gmail, only the drafts will show up. You can then click the boxes next to them, then select Discard. Personally, I prefer my emails as separate messages anyway.
