Excellent points Marko.  Interestingly enough, I discovered WHY they
discontinued it (at least one newsman's reasoning, but it makes sense) for
free accounts.  You used to be able to sync your Windows 8
mail/calendar/contacts via ActiveSync; (I found this setting up a Windows 8
machine this weekend) but it was discontinued because Microsoft was making
Google pay a per-user license.  I can clearly understand why they could no
longer provide this as a free service to their users, but still offer it to
paying customers.
