We are not Google, we are Gmail-Users (as the name states) like yourself.
 We can't answer your inquisitory questions about Why; except that if you
read the Google Blog, they did talk about responding to user requests about
such things.

As to the tabs (which I don't use and never have), when I clicked the
"gear" icon I have an option to "Configure Inbox" which lets me
check/uncheck which of those tabs I want to use, and if I go into Settings
> Inbox, I have a similar option.
