I am a little confused, because I have never un-checked any of those tabs,
and yet I have just the one Inbox. At some point I might have chosen to
Hide all Categories (on the Settings > Labels page). But when I go to
"Configure Inbox," I see that Primary, Social, and Promotional tabs are
still checked.

Does having these Categories enabled/unhidden make some messages go to them
*instead* of the Inbox? It sounds like Harvey56 is seeing new messages not
going to his Inbox.

Perhaps my account has not yet been chosen by Google to have the Category
views activated. I'm happy the longer it stays that way.

How on earth do people come to thinking that this group 'is Google'?

Easy.

When I first joined the group, it was listed *by Google* as being the main
discussion group about Gmail, with no indication that they didn't run it
too.

User groups don't necessarily mean users only. Many user groups are
managed by their sponsoring companies.
