John - By now you've read the rest of th thread, so you know that I did try to reset the password. Tried it many times, both from the desktop and from the Google account online. Everything appeared to go normally, right up to the point where the Google recovery module said it would send an email to my alternate Google address. But no email ever arrived.
"Never say never" - but it seems pretty unlikely that I wrote down my password incorrectly as I created it. Anyway, I'm grateful that things are working normally now.
