It isn't just this, Laura.  I use the text modifiers quite a bit, and the 
extra clicks I have to go through now to do that are IRRITATING. 
Unfortunately the people who are behind these "improvements" are so vain 
they won't allow Gmail users to opt-out of them.  :-(
