Bob,

GMail states that it checks the account on a variable frequency depending
on the volume collected.  So, if it was seeing very low volume, it would
stretch out the checks to a longer interval.  Also, if it encounters some
error when checking, it backs off and delays the next check.  It's possible
that some combination of these factors got you out to the 17 hour mark;
perhaps even permanently pausing the checks.  When you manually checked,
all variables got reset.
