Thank you very much, Kenneth! I had no idea that the 'send' button was actually a 'send and archive' button! Indeed, now GMail works just the way i want it to.
Thanks again! @Andy, I'm pretty sure you must have turned off the unread mail section on top. It's a neat way to quickly see the new mail you have. Also, I sometimes tag important 'to do' mailsas unread so they stay in top there.
