"Mute" works strangely. Or maybe it doesn't work. It is supposed to keep a conversation from going back into your Inbox when new messages arrive, so you never see that conversation in your Inbox again. But it only works that way about half the time. I don't know why. I think it is mostly useless.
Many Gmail users misunderstand how "Archive" works. It doesn't move your message into tape backup storage or anything like that.
