Bill,

You've probably got 2 step verification enabled in which case you need to
enter an app specific password on your phone instead of your actual
password.  If you go to your account settings, Sign-in and Security, App
passwords, you can generate a random character password that you'll need to
enter on your phone.

I see they've also got something called "set up alternative second step"
with which you can add a Google prompt on your phone and tap "yes" to
sign-in. I haven't tried that yet myself so I'm not sure how it works.
Perhaps you'd still need to enter your new app password first anyway.
