After a couple of hours of beating my head against the wall, I found the
problem. My new password required me to put in a symbol which wasn't
available on the virtual alphanumenic keyboard, but is available on the
"symbol" keyboard. That change to the "symbol" keyboard apparently made my
new password invalid on the phone. Eliminating that one symbol and changing
to one which is available on the alphanumeric keyboard, solved the problem.
All is well.
