Here's the situation.
I started gmarks in like... 10th grade of highschool when I had some free time.
It was good for Firefox 2 because Firefox's bookmarking system at the time
really sucked. There also weren't very good alternatives.
Now with Firefox 3 and 4 the bookmarking system has improved a lot that it
makes more sense to integrate directly with that system instead of layering on
top like gmarks does (although the next Firefox system might remove tags... so
maybe not)
It was released also around when google bookmarks was just released. Other than
the one time Google added lists support, they really don't seem to care much
about Google Bookmarks so there isn't much incentive to keep working on it.
Now I'm finishing up college and I just don't have the same time anymore.
Schoolwork, work, and other projects I have started since then. Its not like
Google is going to hire me to keep working on this.

I don't really use GMarks myself because I don't think it is the best solution
for bookmark sync (although I do like some of the features I added in like
filters, suggestions, and nested tags that few people know of) One of the large
problems with making the system separate from the browser's bookmarking system
is needing to re-implement everything the browser does and potentially what
other extensions do as well.

I have been emailed by someone who said they would be willing to try
maintaining GMarks and I might go ahead and give him a shot, but I just don't
think its worth the little time I have to keep working on this.

There is no need to reverse engineer. If you rename the .xpi file the extension
comes in to .zip you can unzip it and get the source.

Oh, also it looks like the amount of work required to port it to FF4 is more
than what was required between 3 and 3.6 or from 2 to 3, another reason I'm
hesitant to start upgrading.
