Yes, he did say that he set the DISPLAY variable manually. However, he
also said that he was SSHing to a "connection point" then telnetting to a
"machine on the "inside" netwok". From this I assumed he was using SSH to
connect to an access point, then telneting to a box inside of a firewall.
If this is the case, the box inside, which is exporting to DISPLAY may not
be able to see the box on the outside (depending on the firewall
configuration) directly, which means that it cannot connect to DISPLAY.
Therefore needs to try and follow the path that the request came in on.
Which it can't do.
