Yes, it is completely transparent to everything, and that's the problem.  the 
X client only has an IP address (as far as it's concerned) to send all packets 
of X traffic to.  The system will use it's default route to route those 
packets.  If the system which has been ssh'ed into is not one of the routers 
in the path, then X has no idea it's supposed to go through an encrypted 
tunnel back to the originating host.
