Well, I did say that but in actuallity it gets passed to the remote system
by telnet.  I was simply trying to convey that my display was set to what
ssh sets it up as.  So in that regard, I would have thought it would work
too.

This actually, is not true.  When you log in to an X system at the console
(or use startx), the X server, or more probably [xgk]dm (or startx) sets
the DISPLAY variable for you. Processes that get started from your X
session then inherit the DISPLAY variable.  If you were to then rlogin to
another system, you would not be able to run xterm without setting your
display.
