As a general rule, whenever you re-compile the kernel you should rebuild
the modules too.  

As for your specific problem, check to make sure you enabled generic SCSI
support, in addition to IDE SCSI emulation, and also be sure to include
CD-ROM support.  The cd writer howto at the LDP explicitly describes which
kernel features to include in the kernel.
