Last ditch solution for all startup problems: Give the option "single" after
the image name at the LILO prompt. For example,
LILO: linux single
That will boot in single-user mode. No login prompts. No X. No daemons. Few
startup scripts. From there, you can piece the system back together. (Or
decide it's time to reach for the backup tapes...)
