So if you have lilo, that's the easier case:
-lilo prompt: linux(or whatever the name is) init=/bin/sh root=/dev/hda1(or
whatever the root partition is) rw
-If you don't have lilo, but some other thing, like chos, then you need the
repair CD. I solved it somehow like this, in case of debian:
insert cd, repair mode, the root device is /dev/hda2.
I don't remember exactly how I solved it, but it's not that hard to figure it
out. You just have to reach that the initlevel that has kdm or xdm started,
doesn't get reached.
-or you can just start with single user mode, what is runlevel 1.
