Yeah, that's what Gnome and KDE are intended to solve.  The problem is you
have to get all the apps to support the protocol, so it's tough to do.
But if you're just talking about text, and you're in X, any text you can
highlight can be pasted with the middle button. In text mode, you can do
this using the gpm program (and the right mouse button).

If you don't have a middle button, GET ONE!  But in the mean time, you can
configure your 2-button mouse to emulate 3, and simulate the middle button
by pressing both buttons.
