My prejudice against AOL, and the reason I summarily dumped them
about a month ago, is due to the following:

1.) NO support for Windows NT 4.0 dial-up support.

2.) Cancellation of ALL "Member's Preferences" with no notice - they
claimed they had to be "renewed", but did not say so when the
option of setting them up was first announced.

3.) Failure to deal conclusively with spam, particularly pornographic
spam, much of which seems to be ingested by AOL from a handful
of large, well-known sites on the Internet. Complaints to
"TOSEmail1" only seem to increase the amount of pornospam.

4.) Mailing me an AOL 5.0 CD unsolicited, which arrived with its
mailing seals broken, and the temporary account names and
passwords printed on the outside of the box. Terrific, now
there's someone out there who can masquerade as me if they
get ahold of a stolen credit card somewhere. I'm thrilled.

So, while I've remained silent during the bulk of the discussion
about AOL and its pros and cons, I will simply say, if you really want
to use AOL, go right ahead. But if they have the US$166 Billion to
buy Time-Warner, why haven't they created a Linux client by now, let
alone fix the problems cited above? Thanks, but I'm sticking with
my clunky dial-up ISP (average connect speed 24000 bps) until Bell
Atlantic offers me xDSL service (in 3-5 years?) or MediaOne decides
to run Fibre into my neighborhood (which doesn't even have aluminum now!)
