I've pretty much moved to my laptop, so that I don't have to
remember which machine I was using when I saved an interesting GNHLUG
posting to an RMAIL file. That led me to want to upgrade from the
28.8Kbps PCMCIA (no, I won't relinquish the original meaning of "PC
card") modem that I had been using. Most of the ones available in the
local haunts are LoseModems, including at least one that didn't say
so. There was a "cellular" modem that looked like it might work, but
it was outrageously priced (>$200) for somebody who will only use it
on the POTS.

Just when things were looking blackest, I came across the
Zoom model 2975 V.90 (also K56Flex)/Fax modem. The fact that you
are reading this message is confirmation that it works with Linux
(is a whole and complete modem). I can't guarantee that it has
great performance, noise immunity, etc., but, sadly, when it comes
to modems, us non-windblows folks can't be all that picky.

Staples had it for $90, which seems competitive with the
PCMCIA WinModems (local retail).

        YMMV

                                                        Bill
