I have been using the External version of that modem from Zoom (Dualmode 56k
v90) with Slackware running pppd and IPMasq, and now RH6.1 using the
kppp/pppd/IPChains with no problems...actually, I'm thinking of buying another
for a new project.

There may not be anything wrong with your modem, or its support under
Linux. Trying it in a different laptop and different OS is a good idea,
but only if you keep everything else the same, i.e. your phone
connection,
and ISP. My first instinct is to suspect that your phone line is the
problem, unless you've had better success with other 56K modems in the
        past.

There are also issues with differing versions of the V.90 protocol that
can cause you problems. I don't remember the details but I believe I
read
about that problem on a website dedicated to 56k modem access.
        The URL is

          http://www.56k.com/

I'd be curious to know what kind of success you have figuring out the
        problem.
