About three weeks ago I reported that the Zoom 2975 V.90
PCMCIA modem works with Linux. While that is still true, strictly
speaking, I now have some caveats to report.
I've been experiencing some strangeness lately, such as
fetchmail or netscape getting wedged trying to read something large
(though I can usually establish other conections, for example pinging
the same or a different machine as the one to which the wedged
connection), and even some instances of my ISP's nameservers appearing
to be unavailable. In addition to the new modem, I've been playing
around with a new version of ppp (while playing with a new kernel),
and I wasn't sharp enough to suspect the modem right off. But going
back to my V.34 PCMCIA Zoom seems to make things much better (and
even seems to be faster, though the V.90 was reporting connection
speeds arount 42k).
I'm sure glad that I didn't give the old modem away at the
February MonadLUG meeting.
Sadly, three weeks is a week too long to be able to take
advantage of Staples' 14 day return policy. It may be that I need to
play with the modem settings (adjust the initialization string sent by
my chat script) and things will be fine, but maybe not. I'll report
any progress if I make it. (Anybody want to try this thing from a
different laptop, or with a different OS?)
Unless I decide that I'm rich enough to for Bell Atlantic's
flat rate full time CDPD connection, in which case I probably won't be
inspired to play with the modem. Yes, it would be slow, but oh so
cool. Does anyone have experience with this? Can anyone confirm that
the CDPD connection isn't interrupted by making a voice call on the
cell phone? That the interface looks like straight PPP on a serial
port, routed to the internet at large? (They advertize that it works
for a Palm Pilot, so it doesn't depend on "win" hardware.)
