Jerry, I know you're a fan of SUSE, but IIRC this is only one of several
things you've posted about SUSE that seems like a serious problem (to me).
I don't have these kinds of problems with RedHat.  Not to say they don't
have problems, but they tend to be more minor, like slighty broken rc
scripts (which, since I know shell scripting, are easy enough to fix for
me) in packages that aren't used so often (like autofs).
