Ben, surely you see the paradox there, no? If they UNDERSTOOD, they would
NOT be PHBs. Eh?
What you're really trying to say is, "KILL THE PHB'S!"
BWAHAHAHAHAH!
Er, sorry. got a little off there... But seriously, it's a hard sell, but
it *CAN* be done. You have to be willing to really make the effort. Go
list all the software that you are using that was free software or
open-source software. One thing that WE did was list all the ways we were
already using Linux. We are fortunate to have an engineering community
that uses Linux heavily. And we've had it in-house for 2 years (on a
lowly DHCP server, but hey, it counts!)
Another thing you can do is go to the vendors' sites and make lists of
their customers, especially the big ones. Send your PHB links, or print
out the page if that's the only way they'll look at it. There's a really
great web page at
http://www.m-tech.ab.ca/linux-biz/
that lists a whole ton of companies that are using Linux in both mission
critical roles and support or niche roles. Of course, many of them don't
know it (at the management level), but that's beside the point!
There are also articles at LinuxJournal's website, and others, describing
how linux is being used by the post office, Burlington Coat factory, Cisco
Systems, etc. etc.
There's also a link at turbolinux's homepage that describes Sanyo's
rollout of linux, supposedly the largest enterprise use of linux to date.
Other Linux vendors have success stories like that on their web pages. I
know VA LiNUX does. I used that one too.
Do you have a color laser printer? Print out lots of nice, pretty color
web pages, and if you can find charts describing the use of linux, print
those too. Managers seem to like those kinds of things. 8^)
If all else fails, just shoot the bastard. [ed. note: KIDDING!]
