Hmmm, not to rain on your parade but my usual recomendation is to buy something like
a Linksys BEFSR41. http://www.linksys.com/scripts/features.asp?part=BEFSR41
It's a 4 port switch with a firewall and DHCP server designed to share a cablemodem
or DSL connection through a house. It's $169 online and saves a lot of hassle.
Then you can fire up a Linux box as a server for file and print sharing and perhaps
as a web site, etc. The Linksys box supports NAT so you can present your internal
web server through the firewall.
I know that's a mouthful but it's a cheap and easy solution that should meet your
needs for a home network, the major portion of which is your internet connectivity.
If you have dial connection(s) there are similar devices for that but it's far more
viable with a high speed connection.
