  Yah, but then, that keeps us from deploying Linux as the firewall!  ;-)

  Seriously, while a home firewall solution like the one you describe can be a
nice and easy way to get things up and running, there are advantages to using
Linux as a firewall:

  - More flexible (i.e., can add software to it)
  - Generally more configurable
  - Software is free
  - Hardware is often free ("that old 486 in the closet")
  - Source code available
  - Strong peer review of security features
  - Easily upgradable, forever
  - Doesn't tie you into one company for support
  - Hack value
