I believe that the free Adobe Acrobat Reader's print menu gives you
a choice of which PostScript level (1, 2, or 3) for output, and
whether to send it to a file or to a printer. At least it does on
the Acrobat V4.0 flavor that they build for Compaq Tru64 UNIX, and
I believe that it works in the same manner on the Linux version.

I have been using the Linux version at home for quite a while, and
my printer is an ordinary HP DJ660C. The print subsystem is configured
to check for "%!PS-Adobe" at the beginning of the file; if it sees
it, it pipes the file through GhostScript and GS then drives the printer.

Remember that PDF is proprietary to Adobe, and has nothing, if
anything to do with Microsoft.
