Today, Kenneth E. Lussier gleaned this insight:

Yeah, I forgot about that. Those modules generally show up in the 'misc'
directory, so you could just copy that aside, and copy it back when you're
done. As for the ALSA drivers, I don't think they go in misc, so you'll
probably be stuck doing another make install on those.
