How far into the install did you get? The BIOS does the initial boot off
the bootsector on the CD, prior to the kernel being loaded. It isn't
until after the kernel is loaded that the filesystem on the disk comes
into play, since the fs code is in the kernel.
During the install process, you don't actually need to mount the CD until
you're ready to copy packages, at which point I'll bet it would fail.
I'm afraid Ben is most likely correct; your disk is very likely trashed.

Like Ben said, write once, bad always... Cheaper media will tend to fail
a lot... try better media if you continue to have problems.
