Because the error occurred during the fixation process. The portion of the
CD used for booting is not affected by that, AFAIK. So it can read the "boot
block", so to speak, but not the ISO-9660 filesystem.

Compare it to a boot floppy whose boot sector and kernel image is good, but
has a damaged superblock. It will boot the kernel, but then panic when it
tries to mount the filesystem.
