   Have you checked out the new StarOffice 5.2 beta?  In my playing with it
I've found it has a number of minor improvements (it's a minor version
number increase), but the one that sticks out the most is the *.DOC filter. 
It does a *much* better job of handing Word documents than before.  For
example, keeping track of multiple (strikeout) revisions, font colors and
many other subtle features that SO 5.1 had trouble with 5.2 handles quite
well.

   While IMHO StarOffice still has some drawbacks, if all you need is good
MS file support, you'll probably find that 5.2 fits the bill.
