I'd recommend leaving the Caldera box shrink-wrapped forever, they've
underwhelmed me twice now (2.4 being the latest).
I've acquired as many distros as possible over the past year or so, to
get myself up to speed on the state of the art in this space. Right now
my favorite is Corel's package, which is based on Debian - actually, I
sprung for the retail pack of Corel Office 2000 for Linux, which includes
a Debian distro, and was extremely well impressed. It might not sit as
well with the hard-core geeks who prefer religious wars over emacs vs vi
to knocking M$ out of the box in consumerville, but I'll live with it.
Haven't spent much time with RH 6.2 but 6.1 was looking very dated in
comparision. Quick impression was that RH6.2 was an improvement but not
up to the same slickness. Caldera Open eDesktop 2.4 tries but shouldn't
have shipped partly-baked. Older stuff, e.g. MacMillan's package
(Mandrake based) was pathetic, they should stick to papyrus-based
technology. SuSE and Slackware looked good to me if you like the
traditional Linux style, can't say how they'd compare to straight Debian
but I'm guessing very similar in feel even if Randy's points are true
about Debian's being more polished.
Ask me in a month or so, I may be giving the presentation comparing
distros at the SHARE conference in July so I'll be researching this a lot
if that pans out. And please keep this thread going, if I do that
session I need to figure out what to say! The comments so far have
already helped me get some ideas, any other suggestions about important
features and metrics are encouraged!
THANKS!
