Do the machines have a 'halt' button on them?  On my Personal
Workstation this is a button to the right on the power switch and
power and hdd leds.  On my AlphaServer 1000A's it's the rightmost
button, next to the reset and power buttons.  Note that the button may
not be responsive during all portions of the boot cycle.  Just keep
pressing it every few seconds until you drop to the console :-)
