Much as I respect Maddog, and his opinions,
I think he is wrong on this one. MS office is the
"standard du jour" of the PHBs (pointy haired bosses).
They use the same excuse for going to NT (2000).
Wait a minute, "going to NT"? Yes, they are using the
excuse of standards, to support going to a nonstandard.
Linux *is* Unix; at least as much as SCO is Unix, or
HP/UX is like AIX, or any other Unix.
Sorry, Maddog, the PHBs are lying to you.
They are using standards as an excuse.
It has nothing to do with their real reasons.
They are clueless about the ecological law that says
any monoculture is fragile. I love to tell people that
the i-love-you virus is not a computer virus.
It's a Microsoft virus. People not running M$, didn't
"catch" the virus.

Even if Microsoft is broken up, it would be better for
M$ Applications corp. to follow Corel's lead, and put
software engineers on wine, rather than port their applications.
That way they get all of their apps running on Linux,
as well as other x86 Unixes. They get to re-release their
old apps, too. Notice that Disney is releasing old
cartoons that were made before I was born, even?
Actually, by the time that M$ would be divided up,
that work will already be done for them. M$ wouldn't
have to do anything, except add a logo to their boxes.

Of course, by that time, how many millions of students
will have graduated in Mexico, India, China, etc.,
knowing mostly Linux? And, don't forget our own
"free computers for nonprofits" project.
I fully intend to get some of these computers used for
job training in homeless shelters, etc. Now you know
why I want monitors, etc. for the project.
