To throw some more fuel into the fire:
A few years ago it was disclosed that other people had come up with
the idea of public key cryptography long before Diffie-Hellman: for
example, a guy named James Ellis came up with the idea in 1970.

Various NSA folks have claimed to have the idea even before 1970, but
there's little hard evidence of this...yet.
